PLEASE HELP LEVI
PARALYZED AND DUMPED. NO ONE CARED!
Last month we saved LEVI, a stray GSD found unable to walk; his symptoms appeared similar to vestibular disease. We rushed LEVI to Sheepshead Bay Veterinary Group for a proper diagnosis – where he tested positive for heartworm. Next was AMC, after several specialty consults, extensive neurological testing, X-Rays, an echocardiogram, MRI and spinal tap – we got the heartbreaking news. LEVI, who was believed to be 5yo is actually 2yo, whose heartworm was so progressed that it lead to an infraction of a blood vessel, which caused a stroke and paralyzed the entire left side of his body, hindering his gait and leaving him blind in his left eye. The MRI reveled a lesion in the brain that most likely happened MONTHS ago – the heartworm microfilariae spread into the brain and stopped the flow.
Our hearts broke for LEVI. HOW CAN OWNERS BE THIS IRRESPONSIBLE? HIS HEARTWORM CAUSED HIS STROKE!
His future is now in our hands. We have started LEVI on a lengthy treatment plan for heartworm, and his foster is diligently working on slow rehab for gait and teaching him to walk again. He’s now on a course antibiotic and steroid to reduce inflammation in the lungs and vessels, and joint support. This is the precursor to the main heartworm treatment to save his heart and his life. This injectable treatment affect the body similarly to chemotherapy.
LEVI IS WORTH EVERY PENNY.
Heartworm disease is PREVENTABLE. One pill, once a month could’ve saved him. Though we got thrown a major unexpected curve ball, we are prepared to do everything we can for LEVI.
Levi is kind, happy, curious, affectionate, friendly to all creatures alike and most importantly – every single person who meets him falls deeply in
love with him. We need your help, our community, now more than ever, with Levi’s costly $10,000+ vet bills and recovery plan. With COVID-19’s impact on our financial support this year, unseen medical cases are even harder on our operations. Please consider donating to Levi’s medical fundraiser, no amount is too little to help turn this sweet boy’s life around.
